Keyboard shortcuts

Every keyboard shortcut in Outbound: menus, the connection alert, windows, Open Quickly and the global shortcuts.

Outbound 1.3.0 · Updated

Outbound keeps its main controls reachable from the keyboard. The menus carry shortcuts for the things you change often, the connection alert is fully answerable without a mouse, and two global shortcuts you record yourself work from any app. Keys are written the usual Mac way: ⌘ Command, ⌥ Option, ⇧ Shift.

Shortcut Command
⌘N File › New Rule…
⇧⌘O File › Open Quickly…
⇧⌘E File › Export as PDF… (Analytics and the Tracking Report)
⌘P File › Print…
⌘F Edit › Find…
⌥⌘M View › Show Map
⌥⌘C View › Show Traffic Chart
⌥⌘L View › Show Connection Log
⌥⌘F View › Float Network Monitor on Top
⌥⌘1 to ⌥⌘6 View › Group By (the six groupings, in menu order)
⌃⌥⌘1 to ⌃⌥⌘9 View › Time Range (Live to All Kept History, in menu order)
⌃⌘1 to ⌃⌘9 View › Go (the sidebar sections, in order)
⌘I Connection › Inspect
⇧⌥⌘P Firewall › Pause for 15 Minutes (or Resume Filtering while paused)
⇧⌘R Firewall › Review New Connections
⌘0 Firewall › Network Monitor

The rest of the Firewall menu (Pause for 1 Hour, Pause Until the Network Changes, Pause Until Restart, Turn Off Network Filter…, the Profile submenu, Mini Monitor) has no shortcut. Menu items that are off in a state stay off: for example, Resume Filtering replaces the pause commands only while a pause is running, and Pause Until the Network Changes is unavailable when the network is unknown.

Show Map and Show Traffic Chart are toggles: the same shortcut hides them again. Show Connection Log and Float Network Monitor on Top are toggles too: the same shortcut switches back. A time range longer than the history you keep is dimmed in the menu, and its shortcut does nothing.

Shortcut Action
⌥⌘K Compact Window (or Full Window when compact). Compact shows just the live list in a small window.
⌥⌘I Show or hide the inspector (not available while compact).
⌘K From Now in the Network Monitor: show only connections from this moment, or the whole range again.
⌥⌘N New Profile, in the Profiles pane’s toolbar.

⇧⌘O opens Open Quickly, one field that goes to any section, app, rule or action: type a few letters of any word, use the up and down arrow keys to move, press Return to go, and Escape to close.

Shortcut Action
Return Allow (when “Answer with Return and Escape” is on, which it is by default).
Escape Block (under the same setting).
⌘1 Remember: Once.
⌘2 Remember: For 1 Hour.
⌘3 Remember: Until Quit.
⌘4 Remember: Forever.
⌘I Show or hide the connection details.
⌘M Minimize: the alert shrinks to a small panel that keeps counting down; click it to come back. The connection still gets the timeout answer if nobody decides in time.
⌘R Show this program’s rules.

⌘1 always works; ⌘2 to ⌘4 pick a remembered answer, so they work only when the program and destination are known well enough to save a rule. See Choosing what to allow and Alert keyboard shortcuts.

Two settings on the Alerts page shape this: “Answer with Return and Escape” (off means the two buttons take no keys) and “Make alerts the key window so Return, Esc and ⌘1 to ⌘4 answer them” (off by default; on means a new alert becomes the key window once its answers arm, so you can answer it without clicking it first).

  • The Open Network Monitor row is labelled ⌘O.
  • The Outbound Settings… row is labelled ⌘, (the standard settings shortcut).

Settings › Monitor has a “Show Network Monitor” recorder. It is not set for you: record any key combination there and it opens the Network Monitor from any app. The shortcut belongs to the background agent, which drops it while the recorder in Settings is learning so the keys reach the recorder; it re-registers when you change or clear it.

Toggle Control Center has no default either. Record one next to Toggle Control Center in Settings › Menu Bar, and it opens and closes Control Center from any app.

Shortcut Action
⇧⌘N Start a new conversation.
Escape Stop the answer while it is being written.

Sheets and dialogs follow standard macOS keys, which Outbound does not customise: Return presses the marked default button (“Add” in the rule editor, “OK”, “Save”), Escape presses Cancel or closes the sheet. The share-card preview window uses the left and right arrow keys to change pages and the space bar to replay or pause the animation.
