Share cards

The ready-made story images Outbound draws from your Highlights, and how sharing works.

Outbound 1.3.0 · Updated

Share cards are picture cards Outbound renders from your Highlights and Year in Review, sized for posting: a 9:16 story rendered 1080 pixels wide. Every card carries the same footer, “Outbound · outboundfirewall.com” with the shield mark, and a dark background that fades from night sky to the brand gold, so a card reads as Outbound’s even cropped into a feed.

Cards include counts, countries, flags and app icons, with dates and award details where relevant. The Year in Review apps page can also include app names when you enable “Show app names”. Inspect the preview before sharing.

  • My privacy score: your score in a ring, your streak when you have one (“12-day streak”), and your tracking share for the year.
  • My network passport: how many countries your apps reached, with up to nine passport stamps, illustrated for the 52 countries that have one.
  • Award earned: the award’s artwork with its title and detail.
  • Year in Review: six story pages, covered below.

The Year in Review plays as a story that runs itself. The first page plays for 4.5 seconds and the others for 6.5 seconds each while their progress bars fill; the six pages are:

  1. “MY YEAR ON THE NETWORK”: connections, data, apps that went online
  2. “WHERE IT WENT”: countries reached, with the top five by flag and name
  3. “THE APPS THAT TALKED MOST”: the top five apps, icons first
  4. “PROTECTION”: connections blocked, how many to trackers and ad networks, and apps that contacted known trackers
  5. “MY RHYTHM”: your busiest day, the share of connections after midnight, and new apps that arrived
  6. “MY PRIVACY SCORE”: the ring again, with the awards you earned
Outbound Year in Review story: My year on the network, 10K connections, 87.3 MB of data and 5 apps that went online, over a golden globe, with Done, playback and Share buttons
Example data.

Playback pauses while the pointer rests on the card, while the share sheet is open and while the window is not active, and resumes where it stopped. Click the card’s left third to go back, the rest to go on; the arrow keys and the buttons under the card do the same; Space plays and pauses; the last page offers a replay. A “Show app names” switch appears on the apps page, off by default.

The share sheet shows the picture before sharing, scaled to fit the preview. “Share” passes the PNG to the system share menu. For a card opened from Highlights, “Save…” opens a save panel; after saving, “Saved” and “Show in Finder” confirm the file. A Year in Review share preview keeps your app-name choice and offers “Share”, without a separate “Save…” button.

If the picture cannot be drawn or written to its temporary file, the sheet says so and offers “Try Again” instead of a silent failure. Cards are rendered on the spot, on the CPU, one picture at a time.
